During a press conference held on Monday, Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen), expressed his perspective that the partition of India was an unfortunate "historical mistake" that should never have transpired.
Addressing the gathering, the Member of Parliament for Hyderabad's Lok Sabha constituency asserted that, historically, India was a unified nation, and the division that occurred was indeed regrettable. Owaisi emphasized his inability to provide a concise response to this complex historical issue, suggesting instead that a debate be organized to delve into the responsible parties behind the country's partition.
The AIMIM leader's comments were prompted by a query regarding a statement reportedly made by Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya, who suggested that India and Pakistan were created due to the demands of the Hindu Mahasabha, rather than being solely attributed to Mohammad Ali Jinnah.
Owaisi recommended reading the book "India Wins Freedom" by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a freedom fighter and India's first Education Minister, which outlines how he implored Congress leaders not to accept the proposal for partition.
According to Owaisi, the partition of the country was an erroneous occurrence that should have been averted. He contended that all leaders active at that time bore responsibility for this division. Citing Maulana Abul Kalam Azad's book, he reiterated that Azad had pleaded with Congress leaders to prevent the country's division.
Moreover, Owaisi asserted that Islamic scholars of the era also opposed the two-nation theory, underscoring that the partition was not in alignment with their views.
