In response to the recent resolution passed by the Congress expressing support for 'Palestinian rights' amid the ongoing conflict, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made allegations that the Congress's statement shares "striking similarities" with statements made by Pakistan and the Taliban. He points out three specific aspects of similarity within the Congress resolution: it refrains from condemning Hamas, it does not deplore the terrorist attacks on Israel, and it remains silent on the matter of hostages, including women and children.
Sarma also accuses the Congress of prioritizing the politics of appeasement over the interests of the nation, stating that such behavior is ingrained in the Congress's DNA.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed the resolution on Monday, affirming its longstanding support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and the right to live with dignity and respect. The resolution also called for an "immediate cease-fire" between Israeli forces and Hamas terrorists.
After the BJP criticized the Congress for its resolution, the Congress retorted by highlighting that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had taken a similar stance on this issue.
Congress's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, pointed out that the BJP seemed to be solely focused on attacking the Congress, disregarding its own historical positions and Vajpayee's stance. The Congress further dismissed reports suggesting divisions within the party regarding the resolution on Hamas.
