The East Central Railway provided an update on Friday regarding the Delhi-bound railway track near Raghunathpur railway station in Bihar's Buxar district, where an accident occurred. They announced that the Delhi-bound up line at the accident site has been restored, and efforts are currently underway to repair the down line.
The up line is now prepared for limited movement of trains, but regular train movement along this route will resume only after the restoration of the down line.
The incident took place when 23 coaches of the North East Express, en route to Assam from Delhi, derailed near Raghunathpur railway station at approximately 9.53 pm on Wednesday. This resulted in the unfortunate loss of four lives and left several individuals injured.
Birendra Kumar, the Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of Eastern Railway, informed PTI that the upline at the accident site is now fully functional. The teams are working tirelessly to restore the downline, and significant progress has been made in clearing the tracks of debris.
Many of the injured passengers are receiving medical care in Buxar town and the neighboring Ara.
AIIMS Patna is treating a total of 25 individuals, and as of now, nine have been discharged, while 16 remain under treatment. Fortunately, none of the patients are in critical condition, as confirmed by AIIMS Patna's Executive Director, Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal.
The Indian Railways has announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured in the incident. Additionally, the Bihar government has offered an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased.
To investigate the derailment and its possible causes, the Railways has initiated a high-level inquiry.
In the meantime, due to the ongoing restoration efforts, the Railways had to cancel eight trains and divert nine others on Friday.
