Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his visit on Thursday, made an unwavering commitment to the United States' steadfast support for Israel. Amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, Blinken emphasized the importance of Israel's self-defense capabilities, reassuring that the United States would be a consistent ally. He acknowledged Israel's strength in defending itself and pledged unwavering American support, asserting, "We will always be there by your side."
While addressing the pressing concerns resulting from the intense weekend attacks that took a toll on both sides, Blinken also disclosed the updated death toll for US citizens, confirming that at least 25 were among those who lost their lives.
President Joe Biden has maintained a stance of strong support for Israel, not explicitly calling for restraint against Hamas. However, Blinken hinted at the necessity of eventually achieving a peace settlement—a concept that has historically faced opposition from the right-wing Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
Blinken stressed the importance of condemning Hamas' reign of terror for those seeking peace and justice. He emphasized that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people or their legitimate aspirations for security, freedom, justice, opportunity, and dignity. In a more personal tone, Blinken shared his family's history, underscoring his connection to these issues. He recounted his grandfather's escape from anti-Semitic pogroms in Russia and his stepfather's survival in Nazi concentration camps. Speaking both as the United States Secretary of State and as a Jew with a secular background, Blinken expressed deep concern and empathy.
Blinken assured that the Biden administration and Congress would collaborate to address Israel's military requirements. Israel enjoys substantial support across party lines, and Blinken pledged to adapt to Israel's evolving defense needs by working closely with Congress.
In response to Blinken's assurances, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed appreciation for the strong backing of the United States and urged that Hamas, which governs the blockaded Gaza Strip, should be dealt with in a manner similar to how the Islamic State group was handled. Netanyahu was resolute in his belief that, like ISIS, Hamas would be defeated.
