In the state of Tamil Nadu's Kanyakumari, a tragic incident occurred as a 27-year-old medical student, who was in her second year of postgraduate studies at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), was discovered deceased in her hostel room on Friday, as reported by the police on Sunday.
This young student had taken her own life, leaving behind a poignant suicide note that has since become widely circulated on social media. In this heartbreaking note, she explicitly mentioned her professors and seniors, leveling accusations of "sexual harassment," "senior toxicity," and "mental abuse." She concluded her note with a heart-wrenching message: "Sorry Appa, I love you the most."
One line, written in green marker, poignantly conveyed a profound message: "Depressed people can also be seen happy. Be kind. Don't judge. Be there for them."
The police have taken immediate action, registering a case in response to this tragic incident. They are actively interrogating the individuals named in the suicide note for the second consecutive day.
The case has garnered significant attention, including from former Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) M Ravi IPS, who shared the suicide note on the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter). Ravi called for a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts and underscored the importance of taking measures to prevent such alleged harassment.
National award-winning singer Chinmayi, using X, also lent her voice to advocate for a comprehensive investigation. She drew attention to the often unreported instances of sexual harassment experienced by female medical students during their rigorous studies and internships, shedding light on a pressing issue that needs attention and resolution.
