Chennai will have traffic restrictions on play days during the ICC World Cup in 2023

In anticipation of five ICC World Cup matches to be held at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) has released a traffic advisory. These matches are scheduled for October 8, 13, 18, 23, and 27. During these event days, traffic diversions are slated to be in effect from 12 noon to 10 p.m. GCTP has stipulated that roads leading to MA Chidambaram Stadium will operate as one-way traffic routes.

The traffic police in Chennai have issued these advisories to alleviate congestion in high-traffic areas during match days. Specific changes include converting Victoria Hostel Road into a one-way street with entry allowed from Bharathi Salai and the Victoria Hotel Road junction. Entry from Wallajah Road and Victoria Hotel Road junction will not be permitted, as indicated in the advisory from the Chennai Traffic Police.

Additionally, city buses originating from Kannagi Statue will not be allowed on Bells Road; they will be rerouted at the Bharathi Salai-Bells Road junction towards the Ratna Cafe junction. Vehicles with passes featuring the letters 'B' and 'R' in their number plates traveling from Anna Salai to Wallajah Road will be rerouted away from Bells Road, with instructions to park at MRTS and Pattabiraman Gate.

For vehicles coming from the War Memorial and Gandhi Statue with passes bearing the letters 'M,' 'T,' and 'V,' access will be allowed only through Bharathi Salai and Canal Road. Other vehicles will be diverted to the Foreshore Service Road for parking.

Vehicles originating from the War Memorial and Gandhi Statue with passes bearing the letters 'B' and 'R' will be permitted to pass through Bharathi Salai, Bells Road, and Wallajah Road to park at MRTS and Pattabiraman Gate. They will not be allowed to proceed towards Wallajah Road from the Labour Statue area.

It's worth noting that these diversions are currently being implemented on a trial basis from 3 p.m. on Saturday and will continue for a week. On the days of the matches at the MA Chidambaram stadium, Southern Railway is planning to operate a special passenger train between Velachery and Chintadripet on October 8, 13, 18, 23, and 27.
