The daily relaxation of the curfew in Moreh, a town located on the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur, has been terminated until further notice. Previously, this relaxation period was in effect from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., allowing the general public to purchase essential items. However, due to concerns regarding the possibility of public gatherings, this relaxation has been suspended.
The decision to cancel the curfew relaxation was made by Krishan Kumar, the District Magistrate of Tengnoupal, who issued an official order on Monday. This action was prompted by the gathering of large groups in the town, which has a predominant Kuki population. These groups were engaged in cleaning activities within market sheds that had previously been utilized by the Meitei community.
The order clearly states that the daily curfew relaxation, which had facilitated essential item purchases, including medicines and food, from 6 am to 5 pm, is now "canceled" with immediate effect. This cancellation has been enacted due to concerns about potential public gatherings in the area.
However, it's important to note that the curfew relaxation will continue as usual in the remainder of the district, adhering to the established schedule from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., as outlined in the order.
To ensure the prevention of encroachments on private or public properties in Moreh, a significant deployment of security forces has been dispatched to the area. Additionally, acting on behalf of the Governor of Manipur, the commissioner (home) has issued a notification that prohibits such encroachments in accordance with a directive from the Supreme Court.
The order explicitly states that individuals found to be in violation of this directive will be held accountable for contempt of court.
