An Agniveer has tragically lost his life while serving on duty in Siachen, as confirmed by the Army's Leh-headquartered Fire and Fury Corps on Sunday.
The entire Army, led by General Manoj Pande, expresses its heartfelt condolences over the passing of Agniveer Gawate Akshay Laxman, who originally hailed from Maharashtra.
Siachen Glacier, situated at an astounding altitude of approximately 20,000 feet within the Karakoram range, is renowned as the world's highest militarized zone. Here, soldiers valiantly confront the harsh challenges of frostbite and relentless high-altitude winds.
It is reported that Laxman's unfortunate demise occurred during the early hours of Saturday.
In a solemn tribute shared on 'X', the Fire and Fury Corps recited, "Quartered in snow silent to remain, when the bugle calls they shall rise and march again."
The Fire and Fury Corps, representing all its ranks, pay a solemn salute to Agniveer Gawate Akshay Laxman for making the supreme sacrifice while serving in the demanding heights of Siachen. They extend their deepest condolences to his grieving family.
In accordance with established protocols, the terms of engagement for Agniveers include various provisions in case of their demise as battle casualties. As per these provisions, the next of kin of a fallen Agniveer will receive a non-contributory insurance sum of Rs 48 lakh. Additionally, an ex-gratia payment of Rs 44 lakh will be offered.
Furthermore, the next of kin will benefit from an amount originating from the Seva Nidhi, with contributions coming from the Agniveer (30%), a corresponding government contribution, and accrued interest.
The family of the departed will also be provided with pay for the balance period from the date of the tragic incident until the completion of four years, totaling over Rs 13 lakh, as per the remaining tenure.
Lastly, the Armed Forces Battle Casualty Fund will extend a contribution of Rs 8 lakh to support the bereaved family during these difficult times.
