In a conversation with India Today, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra addressed and dismissed allegations suggesting that she received gifts from Darshan Hiranandani, the CEO of the Hiranandani Group, in exchange for posing questions in Parliament.
Moitra clarified that the sole items she had received as gifts from Darshan Hiranandani, whom she described as a close personal friend, were "one scarf, one lipstick, and one eye shadow." She mentioned that these gifts were not recent but dated back to approximately three or four years ago. The scarf had been presented to her as a birthday gift. Later, Hiranandani reached out to her from Dubai, inquiring if there was anything specific she desired. At that time, he purchased lipstick and eye shadow from a brand known as Bobbi Brown, which he then brought from the duty-free store at the Dubai airport.
Regarding any other potential gifts, Moitra urged Darshan Hiranandani to come forward and openly declare if he had given her any additional items, emphasizing her willingness to set the record straight.
Addressing allegations submitted to Parliament's Ethics Committee, which implied that Hiranandani contributed to the renovation of her bungalow, Moitra offered a comprehensive response. She explained that her personal bungalow had been in a state of disrepair when it was initially allocated to her. She had a discussion with Darshan about potential improvements, specifically focusing on redesigning doors to allow more natural light into the bungalow.
Moitra showed designs she had received from architects affiliated with Hiranandani, which suggested alterations to the rooms, doors, and kitchen in her bungalow. These design proposals were subsequently presented to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Moitra emphasized that the government body, the CPWD, was responsible for overseeing and executing the renovation of her bungalow, refuting any claims of outside financial contributions to the process.
