How a stolen wifi device and a tattoo helped police find Soumya Vishwanathan's killers

The Delhi Police employed several key pieces of evidence, including a distinctive hand tattoo, a stolen wireless set from a police officer, and CCTV footage, to successfully solve the murder case of IT professional Jigisha Ghosh. This breakthrough also led investigators to the killers of TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan. In 2009, Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, and Baljeet Malik were arrested and subsequently confessed to their involvement in both murders. Four individuals, including Ajay Kumar and Ajay Sethi, were convicted for their roles in an organized crime syndicate for the murder of Soumya Vishwanathan.

The murder case of Jigisha Ghosh was cracked shortly after her body was discovered in the Suraj Kund area of Faridabad. The initial lead came from CCTV footage, which revealed that one of the suspects had a distinctive tattoo on his hand and another was carrying a wireless set and wearing a cap while using Jigisha's debit card for shopping. The investigators then leveraged the Delhi Police's human intelligence network, leading them to Malik's residence in Masoodpur, where Kapoor and Shukla were arrested. Kapoor was found with a stolen wireless set, and Malik had his name tattooed on his hand.

The arrested suspects disclosed that they had abducted Jigisha from near her home in Vasant Vihar, murdered her, and dumped her body after looting her. They also revealed that they had used her debit cards for shopping. This revelation prompted an investigation into another murder in the Nelson Mandela Marg area, which led to the involvement of Ajay Kumar and Ajay Sethi in that crime.

Detailed forensic evidence was collected as a major challenge, particularly for the Soumya murder case, where the investigation relied on confessions from the accused. The night Soumya Vishwanathan was killed, the perpetrators were drunk and driving a Maruti Wagon R, while Soumya was driving alone in a Maruti Zen. They pursued her, attempting to waylay her vehicle. When she didn't stop, Kapoor fired a shot at her car, which hit her in the temple, causing her immediate death. The suspects fled the scene but later returned, only to run away upon seeing police personnel.

Ultimately, the successful conviction in the case was attributed to three key factors: the recovery of the murder weapon, forensic analysis of the crime scene, and matching the sequence of events with the accused's confession statements.
