Hyderabad detains Telangana Congress chief for violating the election code

Tensions flared in Hyderabad on Tuesday as local law enforcement detained the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief, Revanth Reddy. The detention of the Congress leader, along with party members, transpired during a protest aimed at Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, commonly known as KCR. Authorities stated that Reddy's detention was a consequence of violating the Model Code of Conduct prescribed by the Election Commission of India, a set of rules currently in effect in the election-bound state of Telangana.

The sequence of events leading to Reddy's detention initiated when he and fellow Congress party members gathered outside the Telangana Martyrs Memorial in Hyderabad. This assembly reportedly ignited a heated dispute between the Congress supporters and the police, eventually culminating in Revanth Reddy's apprehension.

In an earlier engagement, Reddy had challenged Chief Minister KCR to take an oath at the Telangana Martyrs memorial, pledging that the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) would refrain from distributing money and liquor as part of their campaign strategies.

Reddy pointed out that during the recent by-election in Munugode, an exorbitant amount of Rs 300 crore was spent on purchasing liquor within a mere 20 days. In response, Reddy voiced his concerns, saying, "Harish Rao, KCR, and KTR are accusing Congress of receiving funds from neighboring states and disbursing money and liquor for electoral purposes. We observed during the recent by-elections in Huzurabad and Munugode that the BRS expended substantial sums on election campaigns. Both the BRS and BJP engaged in fierce electoral battles and spent significant sums."

Furthermore, he emphasized that Congress refrained from offering money or liquor in Munugode, citing financial constraints as the primary deterrent. He pointed out that the aftermath of the Huzurabad and Munugode elections was marked by widespread acknowledgment that liquor and cash distribution significantly influenced the electoral outcomes, as reported by news agency ANI.

Additionally, on Tuesday, Boath BRS MLA Rathod Bapurao, hailing from Adilabad district, held a meeting with Revanth Reddy. This encounter followed BRS's refusal to grant him a ticket for the forthcoming Assembly election, and there is speculation that he may align himself with the Congress.
