I've had letters threatening my family and I: US mayor of Sikh descent from India

Ravi Bhalla, the Indian-origin Sikh mayor of Hoboken, a city in the state of New Jersey, United States, recently revealed that he had been targeted by a series of threatening letters. These letters, which he received last year, initially demanded his resignation as Hoboken's mayor. However, the situation took a sinister turn when subsequent letters began to threaten his life and the lives of his family members. These threats were explicitly directed at him because of his Sikh faith. CBS News reported this distressing account on Tuesday.

Mayor Bhalla, a practicing Sikh, spoke to CBS News in an interview, emphasizing that he and his family remained resilient despite the harrowing experience. He conveyed a clear message that hate had no place in his city, and he was committed to standing up against it.

Having assumed office as Hoboken's mayor in 2017, Bhalla secured re-election in 2021 without facing any opposition. Proud of his Sikh heritage, he always wears his turban with pride. However, his commitment to his faith and public service made him the target of these threatening messages.

Mayor Bhalla described how these troubling letters began arriving at his home. The initial letter received over a year ago demanded his resignation. Subsequently, a second letter escalated the threats, explicitly endangering his life. The most alarming threat came shortly thereafter, with the message, "This is your last warning. If you don't resign immediately, we will kill you, we'll kill your wife, we'll kill your children."

One letter even included the chilling phrase, "It's time to kill you." Bhalla shared how these messages injected significant fear and anxiety into his life, combining anger and hate with real threats to him, his wife, and their children.

The severity of the situation prompted law enforcement agencies to provide round-the-clock security to the mayor and his family, even at his children's school. Mayor Bhalla's primary concern was the safety of his kids, who had involuntarily become part of a situation they hadn't signed up for.

Concurrently with the threatening emails directed at Mayor Bhalla, his neighbors, brother, and several colleagues in the city started receiving packages containing sexually explicit and menacing content. While the individual behind these packages was apprehended and charged, the person responsible for the threatening letters remains at large.

Mayor Bhalla is well aware of the challenges Sikh Americans have faced in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. He identifies as a proud American and strives for equal treatment of all citizens. He acknowledges the continued presence of extremism in America and recognizes that this strain of extremism also exists in Hoboken. He emphasized the importance of addressing and confronting this issue through education and love, seeking to ultimately eradicate it from the community.
