Kanimozhi comments on the DMK's women's rights gathering in Chennai as a forum to raise issues

Kanimozhi, a Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu, conveyed that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) would be hosting a women's rights conference in Chennai on Saturday, with the primary objective of providing a platform for women to express their concerns in anticipation of the upcoming general elections.

This significant gathering is set to feature a multitude of women politicians hailing from various parts of the country, particularly representing the INDIA bloc. Prominent figures in attendance will include Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Supriya Sule, Mehbooba Mufti, Dimple Yadav, Sushmita Dev, and Subashini Ali.

Adding to the prestige of the event, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister and DMK leader, MK Stalin, is slated to participate in the conference, which will be hosted at the YMCA Nandanam in Chennai.

In an interview with India Today, Kanimozhi expounded upon the significance of the conference and its origins, remarking, "This conference is actually a part of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi's 100th birth anniversary celebration. He always advocated for women's rights and their empowerment. Therefore, we believed that this would be a fitting way to honor his legacy."

Kanimozhi emphasized that, given the approaching elections, the conference serves as a platform for women to express their perspectives. She noted the prevalent conflicts rooted in issues such as religion, caste, gender, and other societal concerns, exemplified by the situation in Manipur where women and children are disproportionately affected. As such, it is imperative that discussions take place regarding these ongoing issues.

Furthermore, Kanimozhi highlighted the DMK's support for the Women's Quota Bill brought forward by the BJP but also expressed certain reservations. She indicated that the implementation of such a bill might take a considerable amount of time. Additionally, she stressed the importance of addressing the issue of unemployment and incorporating it into the discussions during the conference.
