Mahatma Gandhi served as a diplomatic inspiration as well as a political leader, according to EAM

On Tuesday, during the unveiling of Mahatma Gandhi's bust in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the enduring relevance of Gandhi as a symbol of peace and diplomacy.

Jaishankar remarked that Mahatma Gandhi's relevance remains paramount in today's world, characterized by conflict and violence. He described Gandhi as not only a political inspiration but also a catalyst for diplomacy. The minister eulogized Gandhi, acknowledging his pivotal role in advocating truth, non-violence, freedom, and independence.

He highlighted Gandhi's global recognition, with the United Nations proclaiming his birthday as the International Day of Non-Violence. Mahatma Gandhi's impact extended beyond the borders of India, inspiring nations, continents, and people in their quests for freedom and unity.

Furthermore, Jaishankar noted that Gandhi's influence transcends politics, serving as a powerful source of inspiration for areas such as human dignity, societal values, spirituality, environment, sustainability, cleanliness, and more.

In a world grappling with conflict and violence, Mahatma Gandhi's relevance endures, providing inspiration not only for political endeavors but also for diplomatic efforts to reconcile differences and bridge divides.

The unveiling of Gandhi's bust in Ho Chi Minh City signifies the deep-rooted friendship between India and Vietnam, built on mutual respect and shared aspirations for a better world. It symbolizes the principles of independence, self-reliance, and human dignity that bring the two nations together.

S Jaishankar also highlighted the significance of people-to-people ties, spanning various aspects of life from yoga and culture to the arts and Buddhism. The installation of Gandhi's statue carries a universal message with immense importance.

The minister noted the historical connection between Mahatma Gandhi and President Ho Chi Minh, emphasizing that both leaders exchanged messages during their lifetimes. The visit of President Ho Chi Minh to India in 1958 showcased his admiration for Gandhi, as he referred to himself and others as "disciples of Mahatma Gandhi."

S Jaishankar mentioned the growth of the relationship between Vietnam and India since the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016 when it was designated as a comprehensive strategic partnership. He highlighted the extensive areas covered by this partnership, including political exchanges, economic cooperation, trade and investment, defense and security, development cooperation, culture, and people-to-people connections.

The minister underscored the significance of the friendship and political trust that has been established over the years and expressed his commitment to strengthening this partnership.

Subsequently, S Jaishankar is scheduled to travel to Singapore for an official visit from October 19 to 20.
