Manipur's schools will all reopen tomorrow

The Manipur government issued an order on Thursday, stating that effective from Friday, October 6, all schools, including those funded by the government, government-aided institutions, and private schools, will be reopening.

This decision comes following previous closures of schools in the state, which were implemented on September 27 and September 29 due to renewed protests that emerged in the state's capital city, Imphal.

Schools in Manipur had initially been closed following ethnic conflicts that erupted on May 3. After a prolonged period of closure spanning over a couple of months due to the violence, schools were gradually reopened across the state in July.

It is worth noting that fresh incidents of violence erupted in Imphal West district on Thursday, during which two houses were set ablaze, and multiple gunshots were fired.

Since the commencement of ethnic clashes in Manipur, particularly sparked by the 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts, over 175 individuals have lost their lives, and hundreds have sustained injuries. These clashes initially began as a protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status, with Meiteis constituting approximately 53 percent of Manipur's population and predominantly residing in the Imphal valley. In contrast, tribal communities such as Nagas and Kukis makeup around 40 percent of the population and primarily inhabit the hill districts.
