On Monday, the Delhi Police Special Cell apprehended a suspected individual linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) and two other individuals with connections to terrorism. The arrested ISIS suspect, known as Mohammad Shahnawaz or Shafi Ujjama, had secured a spot on the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) list of most wanted individuals, with a reward of Rs 3 lakh offered for his capture.
These arrests transpired following intelligence suggesting the existence of an ISIS module in Delhi, which was allegedly plotting acts of terrorism in northern India, with Delhi as a primary target. The module was believed to be operating under the direction of handlers located abroad.
Shahnawaz, who is an engineer by profession, was sought in connection with the Pune ISIS module case. He hails from Delhi and had managed to evade Pune police custody, remaining in hiding within the city before being apprehended.
At present, all three suspects, including Shahnawaz, are undergoing interrogation.
During the operation, law enforcement authorities discovered a range of incriminating materials, including a liquid chemical known for its use in the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
Notably, the NIA had recently announced a monetary reward of Rs 3 lakh for any information leading to the capture of Shahnawaz, along with three other terrorism suspects.
In the Pune ISIS module case, a total of five individuals, among them a doctor, have been taken into custody up to this point.
