MS Gill, a former polling director and congressman, passes away at 86


Manohar Singh Gill, a dedicated civil servant who belonged to the Punjab cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), held the prestigious position of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in India, serving in this role from December 1996 to June 2001.

Tragically, this distinguished former Chief Election Commissioner, who was also a prominent Congress leader, passed away at the age of 86 after a brief illness, while receiving care at a private hospital on Sunday.

The final ceremonies to bid farewell to Manohar Singh Gill will take place in New Delhi, scheduled for Monday.

In heartfelt condolences expressed following Gill's passing, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge took to social media, specifically X, to share his sorrow. Kharge remarked, "Extremely saddened at the passing away of Former Union Minister, Padma Vibhushan, Shri Manohar Singh Gill Ji. As a valued colleague in the UPA Govt and earlier as a civil servant, his contributions to the development of the nation in varied fields like sports, electoral processes, and agriculture were long-lasting."

Kharge concluded his post with a compassionate message, saying, "Our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and followers. I pray to the almighty for his eternal peace."

Notably, Gill began his illustrious career as an IAS officer and went on to serve as the Chief Election Commissioner during the period from December 1996 to June 2001. Later in his journey, he transitioned to the political realm, becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha as part of the Congress party. In 2008, he assumed the role of Union sports minister.

Manohar Singh Gill leaves behind a legacy and is survived by his wife and three daughters.
