Amidst the ongoing and contentious dispute between the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu concerning the allocation of Cauvery river water, the prominent pro-Kannada activist, Vatal Nagaraj, took to announcing on Sunday that his organization intends to stage a protest action. This protest is set to unfold as a blockade of the National Highway located in Bengaluru and is scheduled to transpire on the forthcoming Tuesday, serving as a manifestation of their disapproval regarding the Cauvery water-sharing matter.
It should be noted that the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) had issued a directive to the Karnataka government previously, instructing them to release 3,000 cusecs (cubic feet per second) of water over a span of 15 days, from September 28 to October 12.
However, the Karnataka government expressed its dissatisfaction with this directive from the CWRC. Consequently, they initiated legal actions, filing a review petition on the matter with both the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), as reported by the news agency ANI.
In response to the circumstances, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has vocalized his stance on multiple occasions, asserting, "We don't have water to release for Tamil Nadu." Furthermore, the Karnataka administration has reportedly asserted that the state is grappling with drought-like conditions attributed to a deficiency in rainfall.
To add further context, on Thursday, October 5, the police took into custody members associated with a pro-Kannada organization who had convened in Mandya to voice their concerns and protest actions regarding the Cauvery water-sharing matter.
