The statement made by US President Joe Biden, where he referred to supporting Ukraine and Israel as an "investment," has drawn a response from a Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman on Friday. She pointed out that Biden's choice of words implies that Washington benefits from proxy wars rather than engaging in ideological battles.
Biden, during his remarks on Thursday, emphasized that providing assistance to these two US allies represents a "strategic investment that will yield long-term benefits for American security," as he aimed to garner support for new aid packages.
Maria Zakharova, the Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman, expressed her views on the Telegram messaging app. She stated that Biden's comments reflect a cynical perspective, suggesting that Washington's approach has transitioned from fighting for freedom and democracy to being driven solely by calculations. According to her, this has been the case all along, with the US using values it has never truly upheld to deceive the world.
Zakharova concluded her comments with the phrase "Nothing personal, just business," invoking a famous line from "The Godfather" movie. She used this to summarize her assertion that the US approach to foreign conflicts is primarily driven by self-interest and pragmatic considerations. She highlighted that wars have often been considered "smart investments" by the United States since they occur outside of American territory, and the costs are borne by others.
