Congress Member of Parliament representing Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, expressed that his party's statement, which extended support to 'Palestinian rights' amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, should not be considered a comprehensive standpoint on the matter.
Tharoor clarified, "It is by no means a sort of comprehensive view of the issue."
Furthermore, he provided additional context to his position, stating, "I understand that the BJP has been making a political point. It is an evolving picture, and our reactions will also evolve. There's already a much more detailed statement in itself."
Tharoor emphasized that the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting had a primary focus on domestic concerns, particularly centered on the subject of conducting a socio-economic and caste census. He pointed out that this topic dominated the discussions during the meeting. He also highlighted that in the press conference held by Rahul Gandhi after the CWC meeting, the emphasis was solely on this domestic issue, without any mention of the international matter. Tharoor explained that the discussion about the Israel-Hamas situation was unexpectedly resolved in a concise manner.
During the CWC meeting, the Congress Working Committee called for an "immediate cease-fire" between the Israeli military and the Hamas militant group. The committee also expressed its enduring support for the rights of the Palestinian people, encompassing their right to land, self-governance, and the ability to lead lives marked by dignity and respect.
The CWC's official statement noted, "The CWC calls for an immediate cease-fire and for negotiations to begin on all outstanding issues, including the imperative issues that have given rise to the present conflict."
