Sonal Bhuchar's pioneering Texas school has been officially dedicated after her

An elementary school located in the state of Texas in the United States, bearing the name of the distinguished Indian-American trailblazer, Sonal Bhuchar, has been formally dedicated in her honor. This dedication took place at an official ceremony, during which speakers took the opportunity to highlight her significant contributions to the community and to those in need.

The Board of Trustees of the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) in Texas unanimously voted to name the elementary school after Sonal Bhuchar, who tragically passed away in 2019 at the age of 58 due to complications from cancer. The funding for the construction of the Sonal Bhuchar Elementary School in Missouri City, Texas was made possible through a bond issued in 2018.

Sonal Bhuchar was not only a former FBISD board member but also a highly esteemed leader, a skilled consensus builder, and a widely respected trailblazer within her community. Her commitment to volunteer work extended to organizations such as Child Advocates, the Literacy Council, the Cultural Arts Foundation, and the Fort Bend Education Foundation. She served on the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees for six years, during which she held the position of Board President for two years. In addition to her community service, Sonal ventured into the political arena, seeking the Republican Party nomination for the State Representative position in 2012.

In 2015, she was appointed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott to the One Star National Service Commission Board, which is responsible for promoting volunteerism and overseeing the administration of AmeriCorps programs in Texas. Originally from Mumbai, India, Sonal was a professional physiotherapist who had earned her bachelor's degree in physical therapy from Mumbai University. She immigrated to Houston in 1984 with her husband, Dr. Subodh Bhuchar, who is a physician.

The dedication ceremony for the school named in her memory took place in August. The school's mascot is a Bengal tiger named Royal, symbolizing Bhuchar's Indian heritage. The acronym ROYAL stands for Resilient, Optimistic, Youthful, Admirable, Leader.

The school, designed to accommodate up to 1,000 students, includes an outdoor classroom for use by both students and teachers on pleasant weather days. The dedication ceremony featured heartfelt tributes to Sonal Bhuchar's contributions to the community and her strong encouragement of service to those in need.

The Consul General of India, D.C. Manjunath, was one of the special guests at the event and paid his respects, presenting the elementary school with special books on India. Sonal's children delivered an emotional speech in which they shared the valuable life lessons they had learned from their mother. They emphasized her dedication to volunteering for community causes without expecting anything in return, as she believed in doing good deeds selflessly.

The school will forever be a symbol of her commitment to education and community development, which were causes close to her heart. The speech given by her children touched the hearts of many and brought tears to the eyes of those in attendance.

Sonal Bhuchar was a remarkable individual who, in addition to establishing her own professional practice, managed her husband's medical office and raised three children. She was also actively involved with various charitable boards in the community, serving in many leadership roles. Up until her passing, she continued to contribute as a Board Member with the Child Advocates of Fort Bend and Parks, Art, Recreation, Culture, and Streetscapes (PARCS).

During her tenure with the Fort Bend ISD, she spearheaded numerous initiatives, such as chairing the WATCH program, a healthy lifestyle education program for elementary school children, and conceiving the concept for the Fort Bend Education Foundation's Annual International Festival, which promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion within the District. She was also instrumental in the creation of the Student Leadership Program, Legislative Advocacy Program, and countless scholarship opportunities for students.

Christie Whitbeck, the superintendent for Fort Bend ISD, described her as a highly regarded giver within the community.

The dedication ceremony featured remarks from various speakers, including Judy Dae, FBISD Board President, Robin Elackatt, Mayor of Missouri City, Nikki Robert, School Principal, and Rebecca Wells, School Music Teacher.

Principal Nikki Roberts expressed her tremendous excitement and appreciation for the school's dedication in honor of Sonal Bhuchar. She emphasized her desire for all children to develop a love for learning and expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to open a school that pays tribute to a person who had such a significant impact on the community.
