In a tragic incident at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur, the lifeless body of a fourth-year student hailing from Telangana was discovered hanging in his hostel room. This heart-wrenching discovery was made on a fateful Wednesday. In response to this distressing event, the local authorities have taken the necessary steps, including sending the student's body for a post-mortem examination to glean insights into the circumstances surrounding his untimely demise.

The initial discovery of the student's body was made by his friends, who were undoubtedly shaken by this grim encounter. In a desperate attempt to salvage the situation, they swiftly transported him to a hospital. Nevertheless, the medical professionals attending to him delivered the heartbreaking verdict that he had been brought in lifeless.

The police, upon being alerted to this tragic occurrence, have promptly launched an investigation to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident. Consequently, a case of unnatural death has been formally registered to facilitate a thorough examination of the circumstances.

It is of paramount importance to note that the IITs, renowned as centrally funded technical institutions dispersed across India, hold a position of eminence in the educational landscape. Unfortunately, these institutions have recently witnessed a series of distressing suicides, with academic stress emerging as a prominent factor in many of these cases.

In a lamentable episode from the previous month, a 21-year-old student, identified as Anil Kumar, tragically took his own life within the confines of his hostel room at IIT-Delhi. Preliminary investigations into this heartbreaking incident revealed that the student had been pursuing a B.Tech program in Mathematics and Computing. He had been placed on an extension due to incomplete subjects and had been residing in the hostel for the past six months.

While no suicide notes were discovered in the student's room, the underlying cause of this profoundly tragic decision was widely suspected to be the overwhelming burden of academic stress. These incidents serve as stark reminders of the importance of addressing the mental health and well-being of students, particularly in high-pressure academic environments.
