Amazon is reportedly taking a stricter stance on its return-to-office policy, allowing managers the possibility of terminating employees who do not adhere to the requirement of attending the office three times a week. This represents a more rigorous approach as Amazon seeks to enforce its return-to-office policy. Here is a comprehensive overview of the situation.

According to information from Insider, Amazon has made updates to its global manager guidance concerning the return-to-office policy. These guidelines, which were communicated through an internal portal, provide managers with instructions on how to address employees who do not comply with the mandate of being in the office three days a week. As reported, Amazon is "granting managers the flexibility to potentially dismiss employees who do not meet the company's three-times-a-week, return-to-office mandate."

It is important to note that the new policy does not necessitate immediate termination for non-compliance. Instead, it outlines a three-step process that managers should follow. In the initial step, managers are advised to hold a private discussion with non-compliant employees and document the conversation in a subsequent email. If non-compliance persists and the employee remains unwilling to return to the office, a second meeting should be arranged within a reasonable timeframe, typically one to two weeks. During this meeting, managers are instructed to emphasize the job's requirement of being present in the office for at least three days a week. They should also issue a warning that continued non-compliance, without a valid reason, may lead to disciplinary actions, including the possibility of termination.

The final step involves the participation of a human resources representative who might issue a written warning or undertake other actions. Ultimately, if non-compliance continues, this could result in termination. This represents the most significant measure Amazon has taken to ensure adherence to its return-to-office policy.

Amazon's initial return-to-office policy required corporate employees to be physically present in the office at least three times a week, starting in May. This policy was further reinforced in July when remote employees were instructed to move closer to office "hubs." Those who declined to relocate were given the option of a "voluntary resignation" package. In September, Amazon began sharing individual attendance records with its employees, marking a departure from its previous practice of tracking anonymized data. This new, stricter approach underscores Amazon's dedication to bringing its employees back to the office, aligning with its broader return-to-work strategy.
