Taliban names a 'crucial role' for a representative of Sikhs and Hindus in Kabul

The Kabul Municipality recently made an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the Taliban has designated a representative to serve the interests of the Hindu and Sikh communities residing in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul. This newly appointed individual will hold a position as a member of the Council of Representatives, responsible for overseeing the 22 municipality districts of Kabul, with a specific focus on advocating for the rights of Sikhs and Hindus.

The Taliban has expressed its intention to entrust the appointed representative with a "crucial role" in the process of facilitating the return of seized properties to the Hindu and Sikh communities located in the Afghan capital.

In August, the Taliban marked their second year in power following the withdrawal of foreign forces led by the United States from Afghanistan. During this period, Sikhs and Hindus, who constitute minority groups within the country, expressed concerns about potentially stringent restrictions akin to those imposed during the Taliban's rule in the 1990s. According to a report by IANS, the previous Taliban rule had subjected Sikhs and Hindus to a variety of constraints, including restrictions on their outward appearances and the observance of their religious holidays in public.

Furthermore, the report highlighted that, despite the group's assurances regarding the safety and well-being of these minority communities upon their return to power, many individuals chose to explore opportunities to relocate to their respective homelands.

It's essential to recognize that the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan has also resulted in a decline in women's rights. In December of the previous year, women were prohibited from attending universities, and girls have been unable to pursue education beyond the sixth grade since the Taliban regained control in August 2021. This has placed Afghanistan in the unique position of being the sole country in the world with such restrictions on female education.
