Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has revealed a significant decision to commemorate the revered MS Swaminathan, a legendary figure often regarded as the father of the Indian Green Revolution. According to this announcement, the Agricultural College and Research Institute located in Thanjavur will be renamed in honor of this iconic scientist.
Additionally, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University will institute an award bearing MS Swaminathan's name. This award is intended to recognize and celebrate the academic excellence of high-achieving students in the fields of plant propagation and genetics.
During a session in the state Assembly, Chief Minister Stalin declared that the institution in Thanjavur, specifically situated in Echankottai, would be formally known as the "Dr. MS Swaminathan Agricultural College and Research Institute."
Stalin emphasized that this decision was a heartfelt tribute to MS Swaminathan, a distinguished individual who received numerous national and international accolades, including the prestigious Padma Vibushan and the Magsaysay Award.
Furthermore, Chief Minister Stalin expressed his deep appreciation for MS Swaminathan's invaluable contributions to the nation, especially his pivotal role in the green revolution of the 1960s. He also lauded the late scientist for his remarkable insights into climate change, highlighting that Swaminathan was discussing this crucial issue as early as 1969.
It is essential to note that this visionary scientist passed away last month, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking work and tireless dedication to agricultural progress and environmental awareness.
