Visual proof and public records reveal a sizable arsenal of weapons stolen from the Manipur Police

After almost six months of ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur, it remains unclear how many weapons have been looted by agitated groups from the security forces. Recent efforts by the Manipur police and security forces have led to the discovery of substantial arms and ammunition caches in various districts, such as Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur, and Churachandpur. Data from 27 publicly available FIRs indicates a significant amount of looted ammunition, including SLR rifles, 9mm pistols, .303 rifles, Ghaatak rifles, INSAS rifles, and AK assault rifles, with at least 1,792 of these weapons reportedly taken.

The escalating violence in Manipur, often marked by the rampant looting of firearms, has had a profound impact on police personnel, who have faced threats from unruly mobs determined to exacerbate violent incidents. This situation has highlighted the vulnerability of law enforcement officials. Among the districts most affected by arms theft are Imphal East, Kakching, Churachandpur, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Imphal West.

Due to the escalating violence and the use of deadly weaponry, the government imposed an internet ban in the region. These weapons have been frequently seen in local videos, with armed individuals openly carrying firearms in the streets. Some individuals have even resorted to using makeshift weapons crafted from materials like electric poles or galvanized iron pipes.

In response to this ongoing conflict, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called for the surrender of looted arms to help restore peace in the region. Many tribal youths heeded this call and placed looted weapons in designated gun drop boxes in certain areas of Manipur. The situation in Manipur remains volatile, and the extent of looted arms and the ensuing violence continues to be a matter of concern.
