What is an online electricity bill fraud and how to avoid it

Have you recently received a text message or WhatsApp communication that resembles the following: "Dear Customer, Your Electricity power will be disconnected tonight at 9.30 pm from the electricity office because your previous month's bill was not updated. Please immediately contact our electricity officer at 82603XXX42. Thank you." If so, exercise caution and refrain from dialling the number or interacting with any links contained within these messages.

Scams, often in the form of phishing attempts, are being transmitted to mobile users throughout the country. These fraudulent messages are designed to create a sense of urgency, leading individuals to reveal sensitive information and part with their money.

In this particular scheme, scammers send bogus text messages that appear to originate from official electricity departments. The messages alleged that the recipient has unpaid bills and threatened immediate power disconnection, creating panic and pressure to make hurried payments.

These messages are adeptly constructed to mimic authenticity. They may include official logos, employ official language, and even feature the recipient's name and account number, making it challenging to distinguish between legitimate and deceptive messages.

As a result, many individuals have fallen victim to this scam, with their bank accounts drained by these scammers.

One victim reported that a supposed official from the electrical department contacted him, stating that his electricity bill was overdue and that immediate payment was required to avoid disconnection. The victim was provided with a link to download the Teamviewer Quick Support mobile app. Unfortunately, as soon as the victim downloaded the app, the scammer gained access to his bank account and transferred the entire balance, amounting to Rs 4.9 lakh, to their own account.

To protect yourself from such scams:

1. Be cautious of unsolicited messages. If you receive a message claiming an unpaid electricity bill, avoid responding or clicking on any links. Instead, contact your electricity provider directly using the phone number or website indicated on your bill.

2. Refrain from making payments via links or phone numbers provided in unsolicited messages. If you have doubts regarding the legitimacy of a payment request, confirm the amount due and correct payment methods by contacting your electricity provider directly.

3. Be vigilant for warning signs of a scam. Scammers frequently employ urgent language and threats of disconnection to induce panic. They may also request personal information like bank accounts or Social Security numbers. If a message exhibits any of these warning signs, it is likely a scam.

4. Safeguard your personal information. Never disclose your personal information to unsolicited contacts, including your name, address, phone number, bank account number, and Social Security number.

5. Report suspected scams to your electricity provider and the authorities. In the event that you believe you've fallen victim to a scam, contact your electricity provider and the police without delay. Your vigilance can help thwart these fraudulent activities and protect others from becoming victims.
