A bus in Honduras fell into a gorge, killing sixteen people and injuring many more


The government of Honduras has officially announced a period of national mourning lasting three days following a tragic bus accident that resulted in the loss of 12 lives. Authorities reported that the unfortunate incident occurred when a bus, transporting nearly 60 passengers, veered off a highway, collided with a bridge, and subsequently plunged into a gorge or ravine, situated approximately 41 kilometers from the capital city, Tegucigalpa.

According to fire brigade Lieutenant Cristian Sevilla, 10 individuals succumbed to their injuries at the accident site, while two others lost their lives at the hospital in Tegucigalpa. Over two dozen individuals sustained injuries, and emergency services promptly transported the seriously wounded to the hospital using both ambulances and helicopters. Notably, eight of the injured individuals are currently in critical condition.

Expressing condolences and acknowledging the widespread impact of the tragedy, President Xiomara Castro took to social media to convey the government's decision to observe three days of national mourning. In her statement, Castro described the incident as a profound tragedy affecting the entire nation. Additionally, she assured that the government would bear the funeral expenses for the victims, recognizing the need for comprehensive support during this difficult time.
