The Congress party, on Thursday, refuted the circulating reports suggesting the resignation of Kamal Nath from the position of Madhya Pradesh party president after the party's defeat in the recent assembly election against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Contrary to earlier indications that Kamal Nath had offered his resignation as the Madhya Pradesh Congress President, the Congress, in an official statement, dismissed such claims. It's noteworthy that Kamal Nath had a meeting with Congress party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and other senior leaders in Delhi on Tuesday.
The Madhya Pradesh election witnessed the Congress facing a setback as the ruling BJP secured 163 out of the 230 assembly seats. In contrast, the Congress managed to secure 66 seats, placing it at a considerable distance from the BJP's victory in the polls conducted on November 17.
In the aftermath of the electoral defeat, Kamal Nath, instead of conceding defeat, encouraged party members to not be disheartened by the results. He emphasized the need to regroup, focus, and prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, which are just a few months away.
In an attempt to uplift the morale of party workers, Kamal Nath drew parallels with the Congress's significant setback in the post-Emergency 1977 Lok Sabha polls. He reminded them of the challenging circumstances the party faced at that time, with leaders like Indira Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi experiencing defeat. Despite the adversity, Nath underscored the importance of unity and perseverance, citing the subsequent victory in the polls three years later, where the party won over 300 seats, and Indira Gandhi formed a full majority government.
