According to a report aired on state-run media, Cuba announced on Saturday that it had successfully thwarted a terrorist plot originating in south Florida, revealing that a man had allegedly arrived on the island via jetski to carry out acts of violence. The ongoing investigation, as reported by state-run media, links the plot to at least two groups—Nueva Nacion Cubana and La Nueva Nacion Cubana en Armas—both designated as terrorist entities by Cuba.
As of late Saturday, Reuters was unable to establish contact with either of the mentioned groups. The report outlined that one of the individuals arrested, whose identity remained unclear but appeared on the program, was found in possession of several handguns, ammunition clips, and ammo.
The report detailed that the arrested man, a Cuban residing in Florida, had allegedly entered Cuba illegally on a jetski bearing a Florida registration. The jetski was purportedly abandoned in a mangrove swamp along the island's north coast, and the individual then traveled overland to Cienfuegos in south-central Cuba. Subsequently, he reportedly attempted to recruit others for acts of violence, arson, and vandalism before being apprehended.
State-run media disclosed that several other Cubans, residing in both South Florida and Cuba, were also under investigation for their alleged involvement in the plot.
These allegations surfaced just two days after Cuba released a list accusing over 80 foreign nationals and entities of terrorism, including influencers, long-time dissidents residing in the United States, and a candidate for mayor of Miami-Dade County in Florida.
The two groups highlighted in Saturday's TV report were previously identified in the list published by Cuba earlier in the week. They were characterized as "criminal organizations based in the United States that organize, finance... and execute actions against the security of the Cuban state."
