Despite the mounting number of deaths in Gaza, the US is unlikely to reconsider arms sales to Israel

In the face of a rising death toll resulting from Israel's intensified military offensive in southern Gaza, the Biden administration is adopting a cautious approach to influence Israel's conduct while avoiding more assertive measures like threatening to limit military aid. Notably, prominent U.S. officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, have publicly called on Israel to carry out a more precise military operation to minimize civilian casualties, particularly in the southern region.

Despite the distressing casualty figures and destruction in Gaza, the Biden administration is refraining from taking actions such as withholding the delivery of weapons or openly criticizing Israel. Instead, the U.S. is relying on private negotiations, viewing this diplomatic strategy as effective in bringing about certain improvements, such as Israel's decision to allow aid into Gaza.

However, the U.S. official's statement suggests that the administration recognizes the limitations of reducing military support to Israel. This cautious stance is grounded in the belief that such actions might encourage other parties to become involved in the conflict, weaken Israel's deterrent capabilities, and embolden its adversaries.

The Biden administration's unwavering support for Israel, including the annual provision of $3.8 billion in military aid, is acknowledged as significant leverage that the U.S. possesses to influence the ongoing conflict with Hamas. The administration's reluctance to utilize this leverage more assertively stems from various factors, including concerns about the 2024 presidential election, potential backlash from pro-Israel voters, and the pressure exerted by progressive Democrats advocating for conditions on military aid and an immediate ceasefire.

While the international community continues to criticize Israel's military actions, particularly in southern Gaza, the Israeli government appears resolute in its pursuit of military objectives. The ongoing conflict, marked by airstrikes and ground incursions, underscores the complexity of balancing diplomatic pressures, regional stability considerations, and the domestic political landscape.
