West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya has taken a strong stance against alleged disrespectful actions by several BJP MLAs towards Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The minister filed complaints with Kolkata Police, initiating two cases against the MLAs involved. The accusations center around a protest led by the MLAs, led by the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, following Adhikari's suspension from the assembly in November.
During this protest, it was claimed that the BJP MLAs wore T-shirts bearing the phrase "Mamata chor (thief)" and chanted derogatory slogans targeting Mamata Banerjee. The use of such language and actions that undermine the dignity of the Chief Minister's office has been strongly condemned by Minister Bhattacharya. She emphasized that this goes beyond a mere political disagreement, characterizing the alleged behavior as criminal in nature. Bhattacharya argued that it not only impacts the reputation of Mamata Banerjee but also tarnishes the respectability of the state of West Bengal and its citizens.
In her complaint, Minister Bhattacharya has urged for legal action, asserting that the alleged actions should be addressed through criminal law procedures. The filing of two cases by Kolkata Police is a response to the minister's formal complaint, marking a legal process to investigate and potentially prosecute those accused of insulting the Chief Minister. The senior police official overseeing the case has confirmed the initiation of two separate cases based on the complaint filed by Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya.
