Meftal, a painkiller, can cause negative side effects; the government warns

The Meftal painkiller, containing mefenamic acid, is typically prescribed for addressing various medical conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhoea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain. However, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has recently issued a drug safety alert, cautioning about potential adverse reactions associated with mefenamic acid, particularly the development of Drug Reactions with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome.

In its communication, the commission emphasized that mefenamic acid, a key component of the painkiller, has been linked to adverse drug reactions, specifically highlighting instances of DRESS syndrome. DRESS syndrome is recognized as a severe allergic reaction triggered by certain medications, manifesting symptoms such as skin rash, fever, and lymphadenopathy. These symptoms may manifest within a timeframe ranging from two to eight weeks after the administration of the drug.

The alert, issued on November 30, underscores the need for healthcare professionals, patients, and consumers to exercise heightened vigilance concerning the potential occurrence of the mentioned adverse drug reaction (ADR) in connection with the usage of the implicated drug. The IPC recommends close monitoring for signs indicative of DRESS syndrome.

Moreover, the release advises that if individuals come across such a reaction, they should promptly report the incident to the national coordination center of the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) under the commission. Reporting can be facilitated through the submission of a form available on the website www.ipc.gov.in or by utilizing the Android mobile app ADR PvPI. Additionally, individuals can contact the PvPI helpline at 1800-180-3024 to convey pertinent information related to adverse drug reactions. This comprehensive guidance aims to enhance awareness and reporting mechanisms to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals using the Meftal painkiller.
