The age-old traditional dance form of Gujarat, known as Garba, has recently earned a prestigious accolade as it has been officially included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). The recognition bestowed upon the dance form of Garba by Unesco signifies its significance in the realm of intangible cultural heritage on a global scale.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sentiments on this noteworthy achievement, stating that the addition of Garba to Unesco's Representative List "inspires us to preserve and promote our heritage for future generations." In a social media post on platform X, Modi extended his congratulations for the global acknowledgment bestowed upon Garba.
According to Unesco, the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity comprises elements of intangible heritage that play a crucial role in showcasing the diversity of cultural heritage and raising awareness about its paramount importance.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendera Patel also took to platform X to share his enthusiasm, describing Garba's inclusion in the prestigious list as a "proud moment for Gujarat and India." Patel emphasized that the recognition by Unesco symbolizes an honor extended by the global community to the ancient cultural heritage of India.
Further echoing the sentiment of pride, Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy shared his thoughts on the achievement, attributing the listing to the "tireless efforts of this government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to showcase our rich culture, traditions, and heritage to the world." Reddy emphasized that the inclusion of Garba in the Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage list serves as a testament to the commitment of the government in spotlighting the cultural richness of India on the global stage.
