The brother of Shahana, a 26-year-old doctor from Thiruvananthapuram who tragically took her own life due to dowry harassment, has made assertions that her boyfriend exhibited a strong inclination towards monetary gains, as reported by Mathrubhoomi. Shahana, a postgraduate student in the surgery department at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was discovered deceased at her rented apartment on December 5, after the purported cancellation of her wedding by her boyfriend, Ruwais ES.
In his statements to Mathrubhoomi, Shahana's brother, Jasim Nas, conveyed that despite being open to the prospect of a registered marriage, Ruwais demonstrated a strong financial motive, expressing a desire to obtain a substantial sum of money from Shahana's family in the form of dowry, in alignment with his parent's wishes.
Jasim Nas elaborated on the financial demands, pointing out that Ruwais's father exhibited a rigid insistence on dowry. Recounting the sequence of events, he revealed that Ruwais initially proposed the idea of marriage, leading Shahana to believe in his sincerity. Despite harboring reservations about sending his sister to a family with dowry expectations, Jasim Nas prioritized Shahana's preferences over his concerns.
Jasim Nas further explained that he had offered assurances to Ruwais's family, pledging to provide them with "as much money as he could." However, these efforts at compromise proved futile, as Ruwais's family allegedly demanded a substantial dowry consisting of gold, land, and even a BMW car. Faced with an inability to meet these exorbitant demands, Ruwais decided to call off the marriage.
According to Jasim Nas, Shahana succumbed to depression following the breakdown of the engagement due to the dowry issues raised by Ruwais. Tragically, this led to her untimely demise by suicide on Tuesday. The detailed account of these circumstances underscores the gravity of the situation and sheds light on the complex dynamics surrounding dowry-related challenges that persist in certain societal contexts.
