Police said that a Sikh family's shooting in Canada was a case of mistaken identity

According to provincial authorities in Ontario, Canada, the tragic shooting incident targeting a Sikh family from India last month might have been a case of mistaken identity. The devastating event, which occurred on November 21 along the Caledon-Brampton border on Mayfield Road near Airport Road, resulted in the death of Jagtar Singh, 57, and critical injuries to his wife, Harbhajan Kaur, 55, and their daughter.

Upon their arrival at the scene, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and paramedics discovered Jagtar Singh deceased and swiftly transported Kaur and their daughter to the hospital due to life-threatening injuries, as reported by the Toronto Star newspaper.

OPP Detective Inspector Brian McDermott emphasized that the investigation is comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of the homicide, including the possibility of the victims being mistaken targets. However, McDermott noted that it is premature to draw definitive conclusions regarding this aspect of the case at this stage.

A source closely associated with the victims, speaking anonymously, underscored that the family wishes to clarify that they were not engaged in any activities that might have triggered the shooting in the residence they were renting on November 20. Describing the family as entirely "innocent" and leading an ordinary life, the source affirmed that they had no involvement in criminal undertakings and no association with an illicit trucking operation linked to the address, which had been recently closed down by the Town of Caledon.

It was disclosed by the source that the man and his wife were visiting relatives from India when the tragic incident occurred. The source asserted that the assailants who intruded into the home that night were possibly searching for someone else, mistakenly assuming the family to be related to the intended target.

As investigations continue, there has been no confirmation from authorities regarding any connection between the shooting and the aforementioned business.

Further information provided by the source clarified that the family was not linked to the enterprise but were merely tenants occupying the upper portion of the house, with the basement unit also rented out to others.

A spokesperson from Gurudwara Jot Parkash Sahib, a Sikh place of worship in Brampton, echoed sentiments about the family's normalcy, emphasizing the shock and disbelief within the community following the tragic incident.
