On Monday, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar took the step of revoking the suspension imposed on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha, and this decision was instigated by a motion put forth by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP GVL Narasimha Rao.
During the session in the Rajya Sabha, BJP MP GVL Narasimha Rao suggested that the duration of suspension endured by the AAP MP should be deemed as a satisfactory form of punishment. He proposed that the House contemplate lifting Raghav Chadha's suspension effective from the present day.
Reacting to the reinstatement of his parliamentary privileges, AAP MP Raghav Chadha expressed his joy over the decision and extended his gratitude to both the Supreme Court and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
In an expression of appreciation to his supporters, Chadha remarked, "During these 115 days of suspension, I received a lot of love and blessings from you people. You all gave me the courage to fight in my struggle."
The suspension of AAP leader Raghav Chadha, which commenced on August 11, stemmed from allegations of not obtaining permission from certain MPs before including them in a proposed select committee tasked with examining the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023. The suspension was enacted on the final day of the Monsoon session, citing reasons such as "gross violation of rules, misconduct, defiant attitude, and contemptuous conduct," with the matter pending a report by the Privileges Committee.
Subsequently, Raghav Chadha approached the Supreme Court, challenging his "indefinite" suspension from the Rajya Sabha and denouncing it as "arbitrary and illegal." The Supreme Court, in response, expressed concerns about the severe implications of indefinitely suspending an MP, emphasizing the potential infringement on people's right to be represented by a person of their choice.
