Following the announcement of Vishnu Deo Sai as the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has introduced a significant reshuffle, designating Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma as the new Deputy Chief Ministers of the state. In a noteworthy development, Raman Singh, who held the position of Chief Minister three times from 2003 to 2018, is set to take on the role of the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh assembly.
The elevation of Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma to the positions of Deputy Chief Ministers comes in the wake of tribal leader Vishnu Deo Sai's appointment as the Chief Minister. These strategic changes underscore the BJP's intent to establish a robust leadership structure in Chhattisgarh.
Raman Singh, a seasoned political figure who has previously served as the Chief Minister, will now assume the crucial role of the Speaker of the Chhattisgarh assembly. This move reflects the BJP's strategic alignment of experienced leaders in key positions within the state's political framework.
The decision to appoint Vishnu Deo Sai as the Chief Minister concluded a week-long speculation about the leadership transition in Chhattisgarh. Notably, the BJP secured a decisive victory in the recent assembly polls, winning 54 out of 90 seats, while the Congress trailed with just 35 seats, a significant decline from the 68 seats it had won in 2018. The Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) secured one seat in the polls.
After the announcement of election results on December 3, the BJP engaged in deliberations to finalize their chief ministerial candidate, despite having declared a chief ministerial face before the assembly polls. In response to the delayed announcement from the BJP, outgoing Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel took a dig at the party, highlighting the prolonged uncertainty surrounding their choice for Chief Minister.
