The ongoing development of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor has reached a significant milestone with the initiation of trial runs on a 12-kilometre section from Duhai station to Modi Nagar South. This step follows the operationalization of a 17-kilometer priority corridor between Sahibabad and Duhai Depot in October, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the trial run, the electric Over Head Equipment (OHE) was charged with a 25-kilovolt (KV) capacity from Murad Nagar Receiving Sub Station to Modi Nagar South, facilitating the movement of a Namo Bharat train in this section.
The trial run involved the manual operation of Namo Bharat trains under the Train Control Management System to assess track and traction. The train, initially operated at a minimal speed, covered the distance from Murad Nagar station to Modi Nagar South before returning to Duhai with a slight increase in speed.
Looking ahead, the next phase of the RRTS corridor set to open to the public is a 25-kilometer stretch between Duhai and Meerut South, featuring four stations—Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar North, Modi Nagar South, and Meerut South. The completion of the viaduct up to Meerut South in June marked a crucial milestone, with subsequent progress including track-laying, OHE installation, signaling, and telecom works.
Currently, track-laying is nearing completion, and the Murad Nagar station is prepared to supply electricity from Murad Nagar to Meerut South. The next steps involve charging the OHE between Modi Nagar North and Meerut South stations, leading to trial runs in this section with trains running up to Meerut South.
The overarching vision for the 82-kilometre Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor, managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), aims for completion by June 2025. Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour, showcasing the transformative impact of this infrastructural advancement.
