A doctor of Indian descent was found guilty of sexually abusing patients in an English clinic

Mohan Babu, a 47-year-old doctor of Indian descent practicing in southeastern England, has been convicted of sexually assaulting three female patients, one of whom was undergoing cancer treatment. The verdict came after a trial at Portsmouth Crown Court, where Babu faced charges of four counts of sexual assault.

Babu, who previously worked as a general practitioner at the Staunton Surgery in Havant, Hampshire, alongside his wife, another general practitioner at the same clinic, was granted conditional bail pending sentencing, scheduled for April 12, as reported by The News, an online news platform.

The assaults occurred between September 2019 and July 2021, with the youngest victim being a 19-year-old woman. These incidents transpired within the confines of the Staunton Surgery premises, where Babu was employed.

During the trial, evidence emerged of several complaints lodged against Babu for his inappropriate behavior, including allegations of unwarranted physical contact and making unsettling remarks to patients.

While additional complaints were filed by five other women, including a clinic receptionist, no criminal charges were brought forth based on their allegations.

Prosecutor Miranda Moore KC highlighted how Babu specifically targeted "vulnerable" women following his arrival at the surgery as a locum doctor in April 2018.

Initial complaints about Babu's misconduct surfaced in August 2019, approximately 16 months into his tenure, which was recommended by his wife. Subsequently, more complaints followed, indicating a pattern of inappropriate behavior.

Despite receiving multiple warnings regarding his conduct before these incidents occurred, Babu persisted in his inappropriate actions, which included unnecessary medical tests, inappropriate verbal remarks, and causing discomfort to patients.

One patient, diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, testified about Babu's unacceptable behavior during consultations between May and August 2019.

Following these complaints, Babu ceased working at Staunton Surgery in July 2021. Despite his claims of innocence, he was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault involving three women. However, he was acquitted of three additional charges relating to two other women.
