A Michigan man could spend up to 100 years in prison for starving and torturing his brother who has autism

In the state of Michigan, United States, a 21-year-old individual named Paul Ferguson faces the possibility of spending up to a century behind bars for his involvement in the tragic and brutal death of his younger brother in July 2022. The court handed down a stern judgment, describing Ferguson as teetering "on the brink of becoming a psychopath" as it deliberated on the sentencing. The victim, Timothy Ferguson, was a mere 15 years old at the time of his demise, having endured relentless torture inflicted by his own mother and elder sibling. Tragically, Timothy, who grappled with autism and physical impairments affecting his speech and motor skills, succumbed to the ordeal, weighing a shockingly low 69 pounds (31 kg) at the time of his passing.

The mother of Paul and Timothy, identified as Shanda Vander Ark at 44 years old, faced justice earlier this year, receiving a life sentence without any possibility of parole for her role in the heinous abuse. In the same legal proceedings, Paul Ferguson, Timothy's elder brother, was also found guilty and subsequently sentenced to serve a term ranging from 30 to 100 years in incarceration.

During the court proceedings, a poignant moment captured on video depicted Paul Ferguson experiencing physical distress as the severe punishment was pronounced.

Timothy endured months of unspeakable cruelty at the hands of his mother and elder sibling. While being homeschooled, he was subjected to various forms of torment, including the administration of hot sauce, exposure to frigid baths, restraint using shackles and zip ties, and deliberate deprivation of sleep, according to details outlined in a report by the New York Post.

Vander Ark took sinister measures to conceal Timothy's suffering, camouflaging the home environment and installing surveillance cameras within the cramped confines of the closet where Timothy was relegated to sleep, as per accounts detailed by the Daily Mail. Furthermore, she resorted to extreme measures such as locking the refrigerator to inflict starvation upon Timothy.

A disturbing exchange of text messages between Vander Ark and her son Paul unveiled the depths of their depravity, with discussions centering on the infliction of excruciating pain using hot sauce. Timothy's tragic demise in July 2022 was ultimately attributed to severe malnutrition and exposure to dangerously low temperatures, as determined by a subsequent autopsy.

Paul Ferguson, while acknowledging his involvement in the abuse inflicted upon his younger sibling, contended that he acted under the directives of his mother. Pleading for "leniency and equity" during the sentencing phase, the remorseful 21-year-old expressed profound regret, expressing a wish to undo the irreversible consequences of his actions. However, the presiding judge deemed Ferguson's culpability to be equivalent, if not greater, than that of his mother, ultimately convicting him of first-degree child abuse.
