A yellow alert is issued after temperatures in several parts of Kerala surpass normal

Kerala has recently experienced temperatures surpassing the usual norms, prompting authorities to issue cautionary directives to the populace in light of the heatwave conditions.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a yellow alert has been raised in three districts of Kerala following the observation of temperatures exceeding the seasonal averages. Notably, Kozhikode is anticipated to witness a peak temperature of 37 degrees Celsius, while both Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram are projected to reach highs of 36 degrees.

Over the past week, Kerala has consistently reported elevated temperatures, prompting the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to take proactive measures by disseminating advisories aimed at mitigating the risks associated with the prevailing heatwave. The advisory underscores the importance of adopting preventive measures to forestall heat-related ailments such as heatstroke and sunburn.

Among the recommendations outlined in the advisory, individuals are advised to limit outdoor activities and seek shelter indoors, particularly during the peak hours of solar radiation, typically between 11 am and 3 pm. Additionally, maintaining adequate hydration levels is emphasized as a crucial preventive measure.

Recognizing the vulnerability of certain demographics, such as school-going children, the advisory advocates for a reduction in outdoor engagements to minimize exposure to the intense heat. Furthermore, it advocates for the implementation of revised work schedules for laborers engaged in construction and agricultural activities, as well as for street vendors, to mitigate the adverse effects of the scorching weather conditions.

Moreover, the SDMA underscores the imperative for businesses and establishments to ensure the safety of delivery personnel, particularly those operating two-wheelers, during the sweltering afternoon hours. Additionally, the advisory serves as a reminder of the peril of leaving children and pets unattended in parked vehicles, given the heightened risk of heat-related complications in such scenarios.
