Abdul Malik, the'mastermind' of the violence in Haldwani, was detained in Delhi

Abdul Malik, purportedly the orchestrator of the unrest that erupted in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, on February 8, has been apprehended in Delhi. Malik's legal representative lodged an anticipatory bail petition at a Haldwani court on Saturday, asserting that the defendant had been apprehended in the national capital.

The disturbance in Haldwani ensued following the dismantlement of an allegedly unauthorized madrasa situated in the Banbhoolpura vicinity. Local inhabitants resisted the action, resulting in instances of stone-throwing, incendiarism, and confrontations marked by violence.

According to law enforcement officials, six individuals lost their lives in the upheaval, while over a hundred, including law enforcement officers and members of the media, sustained injuries.

Earlier in the week, Prahlad Narayan Meena, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Nainital, informed the PTI news agency that Abdul Malik and his spouse Safia, alongside four others, were implicated in criminal conspiracy charges and the deceptive utilization of a deceased individual's identity for illicit land acquisition, construction, and property transfer.

Reportedly, Malik had overseen the erection of the unlawful madrasa and vehemently opposed its demolition, as per police accounts. Furthermore, his spouse had taken legal recourse by challenging the municipal corporation's notice mandating the demolition.
