An e-bike battery fire in New York City claimed the life of a 27-year-old Indian man

A tragic incident unfolded in New York's Harlem on Friday, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old Indian national named Fazil Khan, while 17 others sustained injuries in a massive fire that engulfed a residential building. The Indian Embassy in New York has confirmed Khan's identity and is actively liaising with his relatives and acquaintances to provide necessary support during this difficult time.

Reports suggest that the fire, which ravaged the Harlem apartment building, was ignited by a lithium-ion battery in an e-bike, according to statements from the local fire department as cited by the Daily News.

In response to the heartbreaking event, the Indian Consulate General in New York has expressed deep sorrow over Khan's demise and reiterated their commitment to assisting his family in repatriating his remains to India. They have underscored their ongoing coordination with concerned authorities to ensure all possible aid is extended.

Khan, a graduate of Columbia Journalism School, tragically passed away at a hospital following his rescue from the burning building. Additionally, 17 individuals sustained injuries during the incident, as reported by the Daily News.

Eyewitness accounts, such as that of resident Akil Jones, shed light on the harrowing circumstances, with the fire starting on the upper floor, prompting desperate attempts by occupants to escape, including jumping out of windows.

In the aftermath of the blaze, the Department of Buildings issued a 'full vacate' order, while the Red Cross stepped in to provide temporary housing for affected individuals at a nearby school.

Fire Department Chief John Hodgens provided insights into the challenging rescue efforts, describing the intense flames that obstructed stairwells and necessitated swift evacuation measures on the third floor, where the fire originated.
