An Indian businessman gives Rs 2.5 crore to the UAE to release 900 detainees



Dubai-based Indian entrepreneur Firoz Merchant has generously contributed 1 million dirhams (equivalent to approximately Rs 2.5 crore) to facilitate the release of 900 incarcerated individuals from various prisons across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since the commencement of 2024. Demonstrating his commitment to humanitarian causes, Merchant, the proprietor of Pure Gold Jewellers and renowned philanthropist, has embarked on a mission to secure the freedom of 3,000 detainees within the current year.

The 66-year-old benefactor, who resides in Dubai, extended his altruistic gesture as a gesture of humility, humanity, forgiveness, and compassion, particularly in light of the upcoming Ramadan, as conveyed by his office. Through his esteemed initiative known as 'The Forgotten Society,' Merchant has already orchestrated the release of 900 prisoners this year, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries to provide a pathway to redemption for those incarcerated.

His charitable efforts have encompassed prisoners from various emirates, including Ajman, Fujairah, Dubai, Umm Al Quwain, and Ras Al Khaimah, underscoring his commitment to fostering familial reunification and affording individuals a fresh start in life. In addition to facilitating their release, Merchant has shouldered the financial burdens of these individuals by settling their outstanding debts and arranging for their airfare to return home, exemplifying his unwavering dedication to the well-being and rehabilitation of those in need.

With an ambitious target of aiding over 3,000 prisoners in reclaiming their freedom this year, Merchant's collaborative endeavors with the Director Generals of Police at the Central Jails across the UAE have had a transformative impact, extending a lifeline to more than 20,000 individuals over the years. His selfless contributions have garnered widespread acclaim from government officials and beneficiaries alike, epitomizing the transformative power of compassion and empathy in effecting positive change within society.

Expressing gratitude for the invaluable partnership with the government, Merchant reiterated the ethos of 'The Forgotten Society' in transcending borders and offering individuals the opportunity to reconcile with their families and communities, thereby fostering a culture of forgiveness and reconciliation.
