Government considers creating a panel to address MSP in the face of farmer protests: Sources

In response to the ongoing farmers' protest, government sources have indicated a potential initiative to propose the establishment of a committee, envisaged to comprise representatives from governmental entities alongside delegates from farmer organizations.

This committee, as envisioned, would undertake a comprehensive examination of pertinent issues, with a particular focus on addressing concerns related to the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism. Additionally, there may be a provision for soliciting nominations for representatives from various farmer organizations to partake in the deliberations.

It is underscored by these sources that the government deems it imperative to engage in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders involved, encompassing not only state administrations but also a spectrum of governmental and non-governmental organizations actively engaged in agricultural pursuits. This inclusive approach is deemed essential for effectively addressing the multifaceted demands put forth by the farming community.

Further elaborating on the context, sources highlighted a perceived shortfall in the prior committee's functioning, citing a failure by representatives of farmer organizations, led by Sanjay Agrawal, to furnish the requisite details of their delegates.

In a concurrent development, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher asserted a pressing demand for the Centre to expedite the enactment of an ordinance to legally safeguard the MSP, a pivotal demand echoed by farmers encamped at the Shambhu and Khanauri points of the Punjab-Haryana border.

This demand surfaces on the eve of the fourth round of discussions between farm leaders and a delegation of Union ministers, scheduled to convene on Sunday. Notably, prior engagements held on February 8, 12, and 15 failed to yield conclusive outcomes.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing 'Delhi Chalo' march spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, farmers persist in maintaining their presence at the border points of Punjab and Haryana. Their steadfast resolve is driven by a collective push for the government to accede to a litany of demands, encompassing not only the assurance of an MSP but also the implementation of recommendations outlined by the Swaminathan Commission, provision of pension schemes for farmers and laborers, debt forgiveness for agricultural loans, and other socio-economic justice measures.

In sum, the farmers' agitation embodies a multifaceted plea, extending beyond the confines of MSP assurance, and encompasses a spectrum of grievances that warrant earnest consideration and redressal by the concerned authorities.
