'I'm not Malala' notoriety Videos show a Kashmiri activist fighting Delhi Customs

Kashmiri activist Yana Mir took to X to share a video recounting her purported ordeal at the hands of Delhi Customs upon her return from the UK, where she claimed to have been subjected to treatment akin to that of a "thief." Allegations were made regarding what Mir perceived as undue scrutiny of her belongings, particularly some empty luxury shopping bags, by Customs officials at Delhi Airport. This incident came on the heels of Mir's recent notoriety stemming from her impassioned speech delivered at the British Parliament, wherein she asserted her freedom and safety in India, juxtaposed against the plight of individuals like Malala Yousafzai.

In her video, Mir confronts the Customs officials, expressing her discontent at being subjected to such scrutiny, especially at an early hour. She questions the necessity of such actions, alluding to her past accomplishments. Despite attempts by officials to pacify her, Mir remains adamant, decrying the embarrassment of having her luggage inspected in full view of bystanders. She alleges harassment, citing the scanning and subsequent delay prompted by the purported discovery of empty Louis Vuitton shopping bags for which she was asked to produce receipts. Mir contends that such treatment reflects the disregard for nationalist citizens in the country.

Furthermore, Mir draws parallels between her perceived mistreatment by Delhi Customs and her recent remarks in London, where she boasted about the prosperity and opulence of Indians. She feels aggrieved by what she perceives as a stark contrast between her image as an "Indian media warrior" in London and being labeled a "brand smuggler" by Delhi Customs.

In response, Delhi Customs shared their own footage on X, refuting Mir's claims of harassment and asserting that the scanning of international passengers' bags is a routine procedure. They maintained that Mir's reaction was unwarranted, emphasizing the courteous demeanor of their staff throughout the process. Additionally, they alleged Mir's lack of cooperation with their request for a baggage scan, noting that her luggage was ultimately scanned with the assistance of airline staff and Customs officers.
