In a tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj, a tractor-trolley carrying devotees met with an accident, plunging into a pond and resulting in the loss of lives of at least 22 individuals, alongside causing numerous injuries. The unfortunate event occurred during the morning hours of Saturday.
Among the deceased, there were 13 women, eight children, and one man, highlighting the devastating toll of the mishap.
The devotees were en route to the River Ganga to partake in a holy dip on the auspicious occasion of 'Magh Purnima' when the tragedy unfolded.
According to Aligarh Range Inspector General Shalabh Mathur, the accident transpired as the tractor-trolley overturned and submerged into the 7-8-foot-deep pond while the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle.
Local residents promptly responded to the situation, engaging in rescue efforts, and the injured were promptly transported to medical facilities for treatment.
Confirming the grim outcome, the Chief Medical Officer in Kasganj, Rajiv Agrawal, stated, "22 fatalities were reported in the Kasganj accident, with five individuals currently under medical care at the hospital and two having been discharged. Approximately 10 individuals sustained injuries."
Providing further details, Kasganj District Magistrate Sudha Verma revealed that around 30 individuals were on board the tractor-trolley at the time of the incident.
"The mishap occurred as some devotees from Etah were traveling to Kasganj this morning when the trolley overturned, resulting in approximately 25-30 passengers being seated onboard. Villagers promptly intervened to rescue the victims," Verma elaborated.
She also announced that the government would extend financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Reacting to the tragic development, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his condolences to the bereaved families and directed authorities to swiftly respond to the situation, ensuring expedited relief efforts and appropriate medical care for the injured.
