Japan's convenience store murder victim was stabbed to death; suspect detained

A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday at a convenience store in Japan's Sapporo city, resulting in the untimely death of a man in his 40s due to stabbing wounds. Additionally, two individuals sustained injuries during the altercation. Prompt action by authorities led to the apprehension of the suspect at the scene of the crime.

According to reports from a Seicomart convenience store employee in Sapporo, the perpetrator was observed exhibiting aggressive behavior with what appeared to be a kitchen knife before 7 am, as relayed to local law enforcement. The assailant targeted three employees, aged between their 40s and 60s, inflicting stab wounds. Tragically, the man in his 40s succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Fortunately, the other two victims, identified as a man and a woman, remained conscious following the attack, as confirmed by police sources cited by NHK.

The perpetrator, identified as an unemployed 43-year-old local resident, was promptly apprehended at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, NHK reported.

While Japan generally maintains a low incidence of public violence, this incident underscores the unfortunate reality of sporadic acts of violence, as evidenced by a similar stabbing incident in Tokyo's Akihabara tourism hotspot in January, which left three individuals injured.
