Judges 'guarding' Shahjahan Sheikh—not Trinamool—Abhishek Banerjee

Amid the ongoing unrest in Bengal's Sandeshkhali, Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), made it clear on Sunday that his party is unequivocally not providing protection to Shajahan Sheikh, a leader accused of serious offences including "sexual abuse and land grab" amidst the volatile atmosphere in West Bengal's Sandeshkhali.

Banerjee emphasized the pivotal role of the judiciary in dealing with the situation, highlighting that they are actively overseeing the matter and ensuring accountability, particularly regarding the absconding leader.

Addressing accusations of shielding Sheikh, Banerjee urged critics to direct their concerns to the High Court, underlining the legal complexities and limitations it imposes on administrative actions.

Providing a detailed account of the legal proceedings following the attack on the Enforcement Directorate, Banerjee elucidated the steps taken by the judiciary, including forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and subsequent orders granting a stay, effectively halting any arrests.

In response to calls for Sheikh's arrest, Banerjee suggested seeking clarification from the High Court, pointing out the court's role in adjudicating such matters.

Drawing comparisons within the party's history, Banerjee underscored the party's commitment to accountability by highlighting instances where action was taken swiftly against accused members.

Banerjee indirectly criticized the central government, insinuating a conspiracy to stoke tensions in Bengal, while asserting the judiciary's role in safeguarding due process.

The Sandeshkhali region has been engulfed in turmoil for over a month, with local residents vehemently protesting against Sheikh and his associates, alleging land grabbing and sexual misconduct.
